Violelation is based on the musical notes found in the dedicatee’s name: CinDy FoGG. In the opening of the piece C, D, F, and G are recorded into MAX/MSP, which instantly slices the sound into tiny granules. These granules are rearranged throughout the rest of the piece in response to pitches played. In acknowledgement of Cindy’s long standing love of Balkan folk music, the resulting sounds range from drones to imitations of tamburitsas and cembaloms, in a modal context not unlike what one might have found in a Yugoslavian village only decades ago.
