Notes
Concords IV The first Concords was composed for violin and guitar in 1985. Concords II was written in 1992, and Concords III for cello and guitar followed in 2007.
Concords IV was composed for my friends Cynthia Fogg and Tom Flaherty with whom I have had the pleasure of working together for many years. They are exceedingly well matched in every possible way, being not only united as husband and wife but also as excellent musicians of great spirit and artistry.
Concord is defined in Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary as a state of agreement, of harmony – and in specific reference to music – an agreeable combination of tones simultaneously heard. From the Latin root for heart (cor), cordial means vital, hearty, sincere, invigorating, and cord (Fr. Corde, It. Corda) is a string. My title for these three pieces plays on all these diverse references: a work for both bowed and plucked instruments, played “with heart,” written for friends
