Having programmed Bartok’s 17-minute Third String Quartet on a 30-minute noon concert, Quartet Euphoria needed just a bit more music, and I seized the opportunity to write something to fill the bill. It needed to be short (just under ten minutes) fairly light (as a balance to the intensity of the Bartok) and fun to play. Being married to the violist, it was obvious to me that it also needed an extensive viola solo. What resulted was Euphoric Waltzes, a series of interconnected waltzes in a wide range of tempos, sometimes several at once.
